Sleeping and snoringHow do you stop snoring? Well the obvious answer is to wake up the one snoring! But what if you were the one snoring? How will you will you wake yourself up? Well, personally, if I snore and snore loudly, I do wake up and the first thing I do is take a deep breath. I tried to reason it out and came to the conclusion that I snore because I slept with my head at the wrong position thus blocking my air passageway to the back of my throat (thus leading me to have to catch my breath, sounds logical doesn’t it?). Well I did some research as well and I was right after all. Here are some of the reasons why we snore:

  • Poor muscle tone in the tongue and throat
  • Excessive bulkiness of throat tissue
  • Long soft palate and/or uvula tissue in the back of the mouth
  • Obstructed nasal airways

So I guess I fall on the last category, “Obstructed nasal airways”. Given that, here is my top 3 tips to stop snoring:

  1. Make sure that the elevation of your pillow is just high enough so that your head won’t arch an angle that would obstruct you air passageway.
  2. I noticed that overweight people tend to snore more, so yeah try to reduce weight and I guess stopping snoring will follow suit.
  3. Don’t eat a big meal right before bed, if your stomach is full it will push up on your diaphragm and limit breathing passage ways.
