Another week, another adsense secret revealed. No guru, it seems, can keep a secret from me! Another adsense guru (actually an internet marketing expert I say…) has agreed to let me in on his insider techniques. Secrets and techniques to further increase our earnings online. Thank you Manuel of http://www.viloria.net for sharing this with me and now the whole world will know how you make money online! :p

Here is what transpired:

Phaw: So thank you Manuel for accepting this interview, so how are you doing?
Manuel: Thanks, Paolo. I’m doing great. Busy with work, yet still blessed to have the health and time to enjoy the fruits of our labor. How about you?

Phaw: How long have you been blogging?
Manuel: I’ve been publishing online since 1995.

Phaw: Other than blogging, what do you do? Do you have a full-time job?
Manuel: Yes, I work as an IT Project Manager in a food and beverage company in the Philippines. Blogging is just a microscopic part of my life. I’m also busy studying and learning things in other fields (i.e., piano, guitar, real estate).

Phaw: Do you have any plans on taking this online earning venture to the next level (full-time)?
Manuel: No, I can’t imagine myself doing this full-time, because that can get quite lonely. Blogging is just a side hobby that fortuitously gives me more insight on how marketing works online.

Phaw: How long did it take to earn $100 in Adsense?
Manuel: It took 42 days. But that was in 2004. Today, it may take anywhere from three to eight months per blog, depending on your topic and your ability to attract targeted traffic to your site.

Phaw: For those starting to blog, what niche do you recommend them take?
Manuel: For your first blog, I recommend you create a General, Multi-Topic blog about the things you find interesting. This will help sustain you, because you will not run out of topics. This will also help you quickly see which are the winner topics which you can spin-off to separate niche blogs. For now, the hot niche topics (as far as AdSense is concerned) are telecommunications and healthcare.

Phaw: Are you doing pure SEO only or do you also use PPC?
Manuel: No PPC. Just SEO.

Phaw: How many hours do you allot for SEO per day?
Manuel: For established blogs, hardly any SEO. For new blogs and partner sites, about 30 minutes worth of SEO per site, usually done during the set-up phase of the blog.

Phaw: When you say you do SEO, what exactly do you do?
Manuel: This involves adjusting the WordPress themes, and gaining backlinks to the different websites and internal webpages.

Phaw: How do you optimize for a keyword?
Manuel: Put yourself in the shoes of a person searching for information, think of what that person will search for in the search engines, and produce content that such a person will find relevant. In addition, create backlinks that point to the content using keywords that your target audience will look for in Google, for example.

Phaw: To the newbies (like me), what do you think is the best step we can do to increase our Adsense incomes?
Manuel: Don’t think of the income. Instead, focus on publishing relevant content in many formats (text, images, audio, video). Next, gain backlinks. Once you’ve done that, experiment with different ad layouts and placement, as well as with other streams of online income. Also, learn how to track your earnings using channels, for example.

Phaw: What mistakes do you often see newbies doing in their Adsense campaigns?
Manuel: People give up too easily, and are often tempted to use shortcuts that eventually get them banned. Some focus too much on the money rather than on serving people online. No wonder they burn out rather quickly when hardly any money comes in. For those who don’t burn out, they often miss out on tracking which pages earned the most.

Phaw: I often see a lot of newbies get discouraged quite easily when they only see cents in their daily earnings, what message do you have for them?
Manuel: Build 30-page niche blogs, then move on to a different topic. Build another 30-page blog, then move to the next topic/blog. Continue adding pages to your first General/Multi-topic blog, though, ideally to 2,000 pages or more. After about six months, revisit your earlier 30-page niche blogs and see which ones are earning more than just cents a day. Build more niche blogs on those profitable topics (but don’t duplicate what you have already posted).

Phaw: Who is your Adsense mentor? Do you have one?
Manuel: The web. People post tips online, and I’m inspired to experiment and test if what they teach will also hold true in my case. I’ve learned a lot from Yugatech.com, Macuha.com, CarlOcab.com, and the various internet marketers experimenting in Twitter.com

Phaw: Have you heard of HyperVRE? What do you think of it?
Manuel: Virtual real estate… It’s another way of saying: “Publish relevant content.” I think you’ll be better off if you focus on publishing content on your own. You can try HyperVRE later, when you are getting at least $500 monthly.

Phaw: Would you like to thank anyone for helping you when you were a newbie before?
Manuel: That was way back in 1995. I would like to thank everyone on the web, especially the helpful people in Virtual Asia and the various BBS’s online.

Phaw: Any additional tips for anyone wanting to earn an income online?
Manuel: Yes… Keep your day job. Spend time away from the computer. Live life, enjoy life. Eat out. See a movie with strangers in a cold dark theater. Travel. Read a lot. Spend more time with your family, relatives, friends, and the non-internet crowd. Gain real-world experiences that will help enrich what you publish online. Your readers will thank you for it, and the web will reward you handsomely. :-)

Thanks Manuel!
