How to Enable Full Feeds in Wordpress and Feedburner

Get Updates by Email or by RSS feed

Do you want to show full feeds to your readers but you can’t since something is wrong somewhere and you don’t know what and how to fix it? How do you enable full feeds in Wordpress and Feedburner without cracking your head open? Fret not! I encountered the same problem and I am going to show you how to fix it (hopefully)! So let us start:

  1. Make sure your WP setting is correct.
    • Go to “Settings => Reading”.
    • Make sure that the “For each article in a feed, show ” option is set to “Full text”.
  2. Make sure that the feed you burn in Feedburner is an RSS 2.0 version.
    • Go to Feedburner.
    • Click the “Edit feed details” link.
    • Then change your feed to RSS 2.0. What does that mean?? So in my case, my first feed burned in Feedburner was not an RSS 2.0 version, thus I had the “Original feed” set to “http://www.phawville.com/blog/rss” which is the problem. All you have to do is add the digit “2″ to the “Original feed” and so mine becomes like this “http://www.phawville.com/blog/rss2“. So should yours.
  3. Create a dummy post so that Feedburner will update your feed right away.
  4. Voila! You can now see full feeds!

If this doesn’t work, please let me know and I’ll gladly help you out.

Note: The feed will be updated in the Feedburner => Optimize => Your Feed section. However, you will see the udpated feed in your reader maybe a few hours from the time you updated your settings as they do not happen real time.

Thank you so much. I could not figure out why my feeds weren't showing images. Now they are. Glad I came across your site.

Thanks for your post. I've been trying to figure out how to get a pretty RSS like this with images and all:

Mine is pretty bare bones - and I just transferred my feed to Google. How do I make it look nice & pretty with images and full text?

I noticed that full posts are not displaying. I checked my WP settings, and "full text" is enabled. In the Google Feedburner back end, I do not see an option to switch my feed to RSS 2.0 in the interface.

    What do you recommend?

  • Hi Lorna,

You got 2 questions there. First is how to use images for your RSS feeds. Simple, you just need to know a bit of HTML and you need to find a good image you want to use. After which you just edit your code like this:

    <img src="http://www.phawville.com/blog/wp-content/themes/Phaw%20Adsense%20Novice%201.0/images/rss.jpg" border="0" alt="Get updates via RSS" title="Get updates via RSS"/>

Above is the code to create the RSS link/image feed.

Secondly about the full text. You need to give the full text RSS feed to feedburner. There is no option there to easily change it to RSS2. But that is not hard. You just have to follow my instructions in my post above and you should be okay.
  • Thanks for this post. I have both of this set up, and if I remember right, it used to display full feed on my Google reader (yes, I have subscribed to my own blog :P ). I recently added Google Adsense on my feed and now see that my feeds are partial (and also ads are not displayed.)

Any idea why this is happening?
  • Hi Anand, I subscribe to my own blog too!! Is this problem already fixed? (sorry for the delayed response...)
  • Hi Paolo

Nope..I still see a partial feed with no ads..I am still not sure what is it that I am missing :S
  • Hi Anand,

I subscribed to your site via Google Reader and I see full feeds with ads below the content. So I guess your problems are solved!!

Try using other readers or other browsers when checking your feeds, that might work.

By the way I like your site!!! Care to link exchange?
  • LOL..seriously? I wonder why I am seeing such a feed then! anyway, thanks a lot for subscribing to my feed though.

By the way, I've added your blog link on my sidebar. Cheers!
  • Thanks Anand! I'll add you to my footer. Just watch out for it :)
  • Thanks very much for taking your time to create this very useful infos .

  • I'm a little hesitant to simply adding a '2' to the end of my feed - not because I don't believe you, but because my feed is a little different than yours. Original feed address is:

http://unemploymentality.com/feed/ .....so do I just add the '2' like so:

http://unemploymentality.com/feed2 ......or do I amend like so:

    http://unemploymentality.com/feed/rss2

thanks for your help. Really helpful post.

    - john

p.s While i'm add it - when my feeds are emailed to people the subject line of the email shows up blank. I'd like it to be the headline for the most recent post. Do you know how i fix this? Thanks again.
