Diarrhea Treatment

Last Wednesday night, I ate at McDonalds, Pioneer at Mandaluyong City. I ordered a cheesburger deluxe meal with a free go big time upgrade since I had one of their coupons. Since cheeseburger is my favorite meal at McDonalds, I naturally enjoyed this meal. However, my ‘happiness’ won’t last long.

30 minutes after eating my meal, I started feeling dizzy. As I was supposed to stay up late and ‘lamay’ (filipino word for attending a wake and staying up late), I did not last long. Fortunately, my cousin who stays near my house was already going home and I just hopped in his van with him.

Fast forward another hour, I got home and went straight to bed feeling very dizzy and not very good. I woke up in the wee hours of the morning and found out I had a fever. I was also feeling my stomach getting very upset and I rushed to the rest room and that’s where I found out I had diarrhea. My stool was as liquid as my urine and that was it. I started flushing out lots of liquid from my body and I got very, very weak. At first, I thought I could treat this by drinking Imodium (medicine that could stop LBM) but I was wrong. I tried to fight it out the whole morning but didn’t make it. At around noon, I went to the doctor for medical help.

In the emergency room, they took my BP, my temperature and did their standard procedure. They said everything was perfectly normal except of course for my diarrhea. I told them about my drinking Imodium but advised against it. Here is what they prescribed instead:

1) Do not fight the diarrhea. Let the liquid flush out from my body and drink oral hydraters (they gave me Orisol).
2) Drink anti-bacterial medicine. I guess they diagnosed the cause of my diarrhea as bacterial in nature.
3) Drink paracetamol if my body temperature was greater or equal to 37.8 degrees centigrade. I didn’t know the rationale behind that specific figure but hey I am not the doctor.

I did what they said but not all the time. Since the hydrater tasted bad, I didn’t take it all the time. The result was me being dehydrated. And as an effect, I felt light-headed and dizzy. I realized that what I was doing was wrong and began taking the hydrater again and yes the dizziness went away.

So I guess what we can learn here is always follow what the doctor prescribes because it is for your own good and drink plenty of water (and hydraters if prescribed by the doctor) when you have diarrhea.

@vhong, Imodium is to stop bowel movement. But since diarrhea is the problem, better to let it all loose than keep it to yourself hehe
