Update: Added more games today, 04/19/2009.

Since I have sort of advertised and recommended the Mobile24 site as the site to get E71 games, I’ll also be reviewing the games they have posted there. This would not be a comprehensive review but would just serve a guide on whether you should download the game in the first place or not. I reviewed the games which did not have specific phone model tags and those that are for General audiences . Here goes:

Recommended Cool Games

Virtual Villagers

If you have played the PC version of this game before, then you’ll certainly love this one! Having this in your E71 games list is like having a pet. You would have to check on your villagers every now and then to make sure that they are okay. In terms of how well the game was created, I give this a two thumbs up since the graphics is above average and the game is very stable (I haven’t experienced a crash so far…).

Buzz the Mobile Quiz

Another one of my recent favorites. I play this one when I am on my way home. This game will keep you focused especially if you love trivia games.

Pirate Ship Battles

This one is of the games with cool graphics (like Virtual Villagers). This is a mini strategy game of battleship with a storyline. I won’t tell the story so just go ahead and download it!

Ok to dowload but…

Civ 4 War of 2 Cities
- Java Array Index Out of Bounds error after a couple of rounds in the campaign mode
- Ok to download for the quick game mode

If only this game was created without the errors I encountered above, I would put this at the top of my list. Another strategy game that will keep you thinking on hours at end. Well what do you expect from Sid Meier’s?

Kojak Detective Puzzles
- Some parts have out of proportion screens but playable

As I was writing my previous post, I found lots of E71 games on the net! And again the problem I saw was they were poorly organized. We (or I) as someone who is finding E71 games for our mobile phone would type out some thing like ‘e71 games’ or ‘download free e71 games’ on our favorite search engine. The problem is the top results often do not give us what we want (at least for me)! The top results would show us mobile phone sites where we can find a gazillion links and pages about games and phones but nothing about our e71 games

To solve this problem, I will show you 2 ways to get free e71 games.

1st Way

I will give you here legitimate links to sites where you can download free E71 games. As of now I only have 2 but as I find new ones, I will update this post. Here is the list:

Mobile24
4shared

2nd Way

The second way is a bit long and manual. Here I will show you how to find free E71 games by giving you the keywords you would have to use in the search engine form. Here is the list (use them without the quotation marks):

“free e71 games 240×320″
“download free e71 games 240×320″
“free java mobile games 240×320″
” _______.jar 240×320″ => in the blank, fill out the name of the game
” _______.sis 240×320″ => in the blank, fill out the name of the game

If you notice, all the search terms/keywords contain the term “240×320″. This is because the E71′s display is 240×320 in size. Also, most of the games I found are appended with that term in their file name so you will most likely find games that are compatible with the E71.

How to Install?

Now on the installation part. There is again 2 ways (that I know of) you can install those games into your E71 phone.

Direct Install

If the site you found allows you to download the game by providing a mobile version of the site, then by all means go to that link and download it from there. Once you have downloaded the game, make sure to install it in your phone memory and not in the memory card. This is to improve game performance (this is another discussion so just believe me ).

Install via E71 PC Suite

This type of installation involves the following steps:

Download game from site and save it in your PC/Mac

Open your Nokia E71 PC Suite and choose the ‘Install Applications’ option

Find the game you saved and install it into your E71 by pressing the ‘Install’ button (right arrow button)

Install game into your phone memory

Voila! It’s done.

Update: Added more downloadable games here: http://www.phawville.com/blog/mobile24-e71-games-review/

It is quite hard to find free e71 games for download in the internet. The reason is not because there isn’t any but because there are a lot of sites that saturate the search engines with irrelevant results (try searching the term ‘download free e71 games’ and you will see what I mean…). I saw my officemate’s E63 phone (E71′s smaller brother) and found out that he had several games installed! He said that he had to sift thru several different site, forums, etc.. just to find those games.

To help you cut to the chase, I’ll be providing here the list of games that he had (not all but some) and the sites where you can download them from:

Text Twist Turbo

Want to play the all popular PC text twist game in your mobile? Here it is! (click on the image)

Chessmaster

Want to play chess on the run? Here you go! (click on the image)

Luxor 2

Just wanna play Luxor? (click on the image)

I’ll be doing sifting on my own and find sites where we can download free E71 games. So come back next time and check out how to get more free E71 games!

What free E71 application gives you free calls? None other than Fring! Well, what is Fring? Fring is a free mobile application for the Nokia E71 and is compatible with other mobile phone units as well.

So how do you get free calls using Fring? The answer is Skype. First and foremost, you and the person you are going to call should have Fring installed on your E71 phones. Then, both of you should have Skype accounts as well. Once you meet this req’ts, the only thing left is an internet wifi connection or any connection that would connect your E71 phone to the internet.

Once everything is set, here are the steps to follow (by both you and the callee):

1) Open the Fring E71 application.
2) Once connected, login to skype.
3) Select the person you are going to call

I got married last year December 6, 2008 to my beautiful wife Janet. Yeah I know, there was no announcement of any sort in this blog. The reason was plain simple, I was too busy. From work to getting ready for the wedding, time to blog was not a convenience (if you notice I was not able to blog for about 2 months…).

To make it up to you though, I’d like to share the checklist that I used to prepare my wedding. I don’t know if you will find this checklist in some other site (I think you would find something similar) but I’d like to share the things that you need to get ready with and prepare for before that big day. What I would actually share at the end of this blog is actually an excel spreadsheet that I used to track the important items/things for the wedding, or what we are calling the wedding checklist that I am giving out for free. But before that let us go through the process of getting married (at least how I did it and the technical aspect of it). Please be reminded as well that some items here might not be applicable to some of you as you might be living in a different country and have different customs and traditions.

1) Finalize budget and guest list

For me, this is the hardest part of the preparation. Budgeting takes a lot of time as you have to canvas with the different stores to get their different prices and quality of service. While budgeting is hard, finalizing the guest list is even harder. At first I targeted 150 as the maximum number of persons I would invite. However, this number shot up to 200 as the wedding day drew nearer. But I guess, this depends on you. If you are going to be strict with yourselves and really control your budget, then you don’t have to do what I did where I changed the maximum number of guests to accommodate more friends (guests).

It is good to take note that I put the budget and number of guests together as they are directly proportional meaning the more guests you have, the higher the budget should be.

I am not going to itemize the things you need to prepare here because it is already in the wedding checklist. However, what I want to point out here is that instead of utilizing products and services from different merchants, it is better to get a package deal on the important things in a wedding (like what we did). For example, if you are already going to find a venue for your wedding, why not ask if they offer wedding packages as well that would include catering for the food, wedding cake, sound system, etc… Getting a wedding package deal won’t only spare you from a couple of headaches but also trim down your budget a bit (most package deals are cheaper).

If you are getting married, live near Laguna and want a wedding package deal, you can check out this site where we got married:

Ciprianos Garden

2) Create/Prepare and Send Invitations

If you’ve already noticed, we were trying to save money as much as possible (package deals remember?). That is why for the invitations, we created them ourselves using Photoshop, photo paper and hard cardboard. I did the design using Photoshop and printed the invitations using photo paper. While Janet created the invitation envelopes using hard cardboard. Here is a sample:

And yes, those are our wedding rings on top of the invitations.

I am no Photoshop expert but I do know basic stuff with it. To learn Photoshop effects and advanced techniques, I learned via the websites below:

Photoshope Essentials
Finesse FX

Once the invitations are ready, send them out! It is good to send them out early to give you time to get their RSVPs. I sent out mine a month ahead of the wedding.

3) Ready Documents for Marriage License

Though this is at number 3, this is one of the most important things you have to get. Without this, you cannot get married. To get your marriage license, you need:

Personal appearance in getting marriage license

Birth certificate

Certificate of Attendance in a pre-marital counseling and family planning seminar

Written parental advice(a written indication that the parents are aware of the couple’s intent to marry, for persons aged between 22-24)

Written parental consent(a written consent from the parents, for persons aged between 18-21)

For persons 25 above, nothing is needed from parents. However, a ‘certificate of no marriage’ might be required by certain municipalities (or religious organizations, i.e. church)

For more information on the legal requirements needed in the Philippines, you may check the government’s website itself: Legal Req’ts

4) Ready Other Things (ex. Bridal Car, Cake, etc…)

There are many ‘other’ things that needs to be prepare beforehand. But as pointed out just now, this other things may vary depending on background and culture so I’ll leave this out for the couple to figure out. But for the sake of reference, I’ll put the ‘other’ things I considered for my wedding (not exhaustive):

Sounds

Video

Pics

Cake

Car

Chairs

Table

Dress

Invitation

Champagne

Quartet

Guestbook

Floral

Lights

Frame

Tarpaulin

Chandalier

Gazebo

Red Carpet

And here is the checklist. If you find something unclear, please just comment below:

Free Wedding Checklist

If you do like this checklist, I could also discuss here another checklist that I used to make sure everything falls into place during the wedding itself.

(Note: If you want pics/images of my Linksys router to Aztech DSL605E modem setup, you can go down straight below. But I recommend reading thru the post first then following the instructions.)

I just recently (like 8 hours ago from this writing) got connected to the Globelines broadband internet. Though I am still connected to Smart Bro, I will cut the connection next week. Before I explain the steps, I’d just would like to give a brief overview on my wireless setup at home.

I have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router and I used it with Smart Bro just by connecting the Smart Bro connections RJ45 cable to the LAN port of the router. This is the best thing and only perk Smart Bro has in my opinion. I use the wireless router to make my house a hotspot and to connect my laptop to the internet via Wifi. I also have an old desktop which is not Wifi-enabled and thus needs to be connected to the router via cable.

Now, the Globelines connection has a different setup. It uses a modem unlike Smart Bro. I am not that familiar with the different modems Globelines uses but the steps in configuring the router and the modem should be similar. Here goes:

1) Connect your laptop/PC to the linksys router via RJ45 cable.

2) Go to the router’s admin page via 192.168.1.1 and change the default IP to 192.168.1.2 (this is assuming that your Aztech modem’s gateway is 192.168.1.1 which is usually the case…).

3) Make sure that the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 and then disable DHCP. Save the settings.

4) Connect the modem to the router via one of the LAN ports and not thru the WAN port(internet port). This is important. This makes the modem and the router bridged and they are now in 1 subnet.

5) Reboot everything from PC to router to modem. The wireless router should now be connected to the modem.

The steps above would enable any Wifi-enabled devices to connect to the Internet thru via the router. However, if you need to connect a laptop or a PC via cable, you need to follow some similar steps as above. Just go the LAN’s settings, set the IP, subnet mask, gateway, DNS, etc… as above. This would make the router, modem and PC(connected via cable) in one subnet. Reboot everything and the cable-connected PC should now have internet access.

So if you are successful in following the steps above, your setup should look something like this:

I received an email worth reading. It is about asparagus and its role in defeating cancer. I guess this would be an interesting post since we always try natural and less expensive ways to cure ourselves when we are sick. We want natural because it is inherent in us to think that nature is supposed to help heal us without any side effects. We want less expensive for reasons that are obvious, to save money. For those not familiar with asparagus, here is an image of it:

So the questions are, what is the asparagus treatment? Can asparagus cure cancer? What does asparagus and cancer cure have in common? Can we eat asparagus as cancer cure?

Let us see those questions answered, here goes:

Several years ago, a man seeking asparagus for a friend who had cancer. He gave me a photocopied copy of an article entitled `Asparagus for Cancer’ printed in Cancer News Journal, December 1979.

I will share it here, just as it was shared with me: ‘I am a biochemist, and have specialized in the relation of diet to health for over 50 years. Several years ago, I learned of the discovery of Richard R. Vensal, D.D.S. that asparagus might cure cancer.

Since then, I have worked with him on his project. We have accumulated a number of favorable case histories.

Here are a few examples:

Case No. 1, A man with an almost hopeless case of Hodgkin’s disease (cancer of the lymph glands) who was completely incapacitated. Within 1 year of starting the asparagus therapy, his doctors were unable to detect any signs of cancer, and he was back on a schedule of strenuous exercise.

Case No. 2, a successful businessman 68 years old who suffered from cancer of the bladder for 16 years. After years of medical treatments, including radiation without improvement, he went on asparagus. Within 3 months, examinations revealed that his bladder tumor had disappeared and that his kidneys were normal.

Case No. 3, a man who had lung cancer. On March 5th 1971 , he was put on the operating table where they found lung cancer so widely spread that it was inoperable. The surgeon sewed him up and declared his case hopeless. On April 5th he heard about the asparagus therapy and immediately started taking it.By August, x-ray pictures revealed that all signs of the cancer had disappeared. He is back at his regular business routine.

Case No. 4, a woman who was troubled for a number of years with skin cancer. She finally developed different skin cancers which were diagnosed by asking specialist as advanced. Within 3 months after starting on asparagus, her skin specialist said that her skin looked fine and no more skin lesions. This woman reported that the asparagus therapy also cured her kidney disease, which started in 1949. She had over 10 operations for kidney stones, and was receiving government disability payments for an inoperable, terminal, kidney condition. She attributes the cure of this kidney trouble entirely to the asparagus.

I was not surprised at this result as ` The elements of materia medica ‘, edited in 1854 by a Professor at the University of Pennsylvania stated that asparagus was used as a popular remedy for kidney stones. He even referred to experiments in 1739 on the power of asparagus in dissolving stones.

We would have other case histories, but the medical establishment has interfered with our obtaining some of the records. I am therefore appealing to readers to spread this good news and help us to gather a large number of case histories that will overwhelm the medical skeptics about this unbelievably simple and natural remedy. For the treatment, asparagus should be cooked before using , and therefore canned asparagus is just as good as fresh.

I have corresponded with the two leading canners of asparagus, Giant Giant and Stokely, and I am satisfied that these brands contain no pesticides or preservatives.

Place the cooked asparagus in a blender and liquefy to make a puree, and store in the refrigerator. Give the patient 4 full tablespoons twice daily , morning and evening.

Patients usually show some improvement in 2-4 weeks. It can be diluted with water and used as a cold or hot drink. This suggested dosage is based on present experience, but certainly larger amounts can do no harm and may be needed in some cases.

As a biochemist I am convinced of the old saying that `what cures can prevent’. Based on this theory, my wife and I have been using asparagus puree as a beverage with our meals.

We take 2 tablespoons diluted in water to suit our taste with breakfast and with dinner. I take mine hot and my wife prefers hers cold. For years, we have made it a practice to have blood surveys taken as part of our regular checkups.

The last blood survey, taken by a medical doctor who specializes in the nutritional approach to health, showed substantial improvements in all categories over the last one, and we can attribute these improvements to nothing but the asparagus drink.

As a biochemist, I have made an extensive study of all aspects of cancer, and all of the proposed cures. As a result, I am convinced that asparagus fits in better with the latest theories about cancer. Asparagus contains a good supply of protein called histones, which are believed to be active in controlling cell growth. For that reason, I believe asparagus can be said to contain a substance that I call cell growth normalizer. That accounts for its action on cancer and inacting as a general body tonic.

In any event, regardless of theory, asparagus used as we suggest is a harmless substance.
The FDA cannot prevent you from using it and it may do you much good. It has been reported by the US National Cancer Institute that asparagus is the highest tested food containing glutathione , which is considered one of the body’s most potent anticarcinogens and antioxidants.

Phaw recently just moved in into California Garden Square as a result of getting tired of going back and forth from Laguna to Boni and back. This prompted him to find a way to get an internet connection so that he could still continue being online to manage his online business and of course to blog =P.

He asked one of his housemates how he connects to the internet and he said that he uses his 3G phone as a modem to connect to the internet via the Smart network.

“That’s cool!” Phaw exclaims.

But there is also another Smart network service that is being advertised all over the country. This is the Smart Bro Prepaid. Here is a brief description of the service from Smart and Phaw quotes:

Smart BRO brings you another exciting product, Smart BRO Prepaid that allows you to surf the net anywhere there’s a PC! Absolutely no Monthly Service Fee since it’s prepaid!

With the Smart BRO USB Modem (a small, palm-sized device) that comes with every application, you get instant connection to the internet just by plugging it to your computer.

Phaw went to a Smart Wireless Center to inquire of this service and asked how he could get one. First, he asked for the initial cost to get connected. As stated by the customer service rep, you would need to pay Php4,500 as initial cost for the modem and this price would also include a Php30 free load. Next, Phaw inquired about the rates as shown below:

So, that is Php20 per hour. It’s like going to an internet cafe to surf the internet. The rep also mentioned it is best that you have a 3G signal at your area to enjoy the full benefits of the service.

Now, how is having a 3G phone used as a modem better than getting this service that comes with a dedicated modem? Basically the only difference between the two ways of connecting to the internet is the modem used. The rates are the same(Php20/hour) but the Smart Bro prepaid modem uses 3G signal to get data(as mentioned by the rep). That means if you do not have a 3G signal in your area then getting a Smart Bro prepaid kit is a definite NO because you won’t have any internet connection.

However, if you buy a 3G-enabled phone, it is way more worth it for your money because when you are not using the phone as a modem, you can use it as a normal cellphone! Additionally, if you don’t have 3G signal in your area, it would use GPRS to transfer data(though at a slower rate). Can the smartbro prepaid modem do that? Phaw doesn’t think so.

If you already have a 3G phone, then you needn’t cash-out Php4,500 just to get the kit. All you need to do is buy a Smart sim card to avail of the 3G services they offer.

Thus, getting a Smart 3G phone and using it as a modem to connect to the internet is better because:

It is a better value for your money

It can connect to the internet even without a 3G signal
